Atmospheric Depth in Watercolor Landscapes
Create a sense of atmospheric depth in loose landscapes.
In this class we’ll focus on how color temperature, value, and saturation can create space and distance.
We’ll begin with a short color-mixing lesson, then build calm, layered landscapes using simple, mostly horizontal layers of color.
Once the painting is dry, we’ll add a few white lines and discuss how using a viewfinder can help to find strong compositions within the finished piece.
You’ll discover how to:
- Create atmospheric depth using color
- Mix warm and cool tones
- Layer watercolor loosely without overworking
- Use simple white lines to separate foreground, middle ground, and background
When it comes to materials, you’ll just need watercolor paper and paints, one or two brushes, and a white pen, crayon, or a fine brush with white paint.
Let's paint, experiment, and have fun painting together!
